Return to 2024 Local Government Workshops

2024 WALGA Tax GST Workshop

Date and Location Pricing
Register for 22 March

We are pleased to invite you to our upcoming full-day interactive workshop. The 2024 GST Workshop will focus on key GST issues pertinent to government-related bodies, including Local and State Governments, and is suitable for various experience levels.

Although the Goods and Services Tax (GST) seems simple, its complexity escalates quickly due to the nature of transactions and GST legislation, becoming a significant commercial concern for governments. The workshop will cover key topics, including the basics of GST, administration, and compliance, as well as more intricate areas such as grants, property, fees, and charges. These sessions aim to provide participants with valuable insights for identifying real-world issues.

We will discuss current topical issues and tips, including tax risk governance and the Auditor General's comments on government bodies' internal control environments. We strongly encourage audience participation to maximise the benefits from the sessions.

The workshop will be conducted in a hands-on style (both in-house and online), featuring a step-by-step explanation of various topics and practical examples relevant to local and state governments.

Key Focus Areas include:

  • Tax Update: Topical matters and essential tips.
  • GST Basics: General principles.
  • GST Administration: Guidelines on ATO compliance documentation.
  • Grants and Contributions: Examining how GST applies to financial assistance, with a focus on agreements and surrounding facts.
  • Fees and Charges: Emphasising the importance of detail and regular review.
  • Land and Property Deals: Addressing GST considerations in high-value transactions and potential planning opportunities.
  • New GST Rulings: Covering those issued in the 2023-24 financial year.

Delegates will receive a comprehensive workbook, available in electronic or hardcopy formats, which includes detailed information on all topics, case studies with questions and answers, key tips, and takeaway points.
